Counties of England

England is divided into 48 counties, that together cover all of the country. These counties are commonly called the geographical counties of England for that reason.
Each county has a county town, which historically was the administrative centre for local government and was often the largest town in the county.
Ceremonial Counties, or Lieutenancies, of England
The 48 geographic counties are also known as Ceremonial Counties. The Act of Parliament known as the Lieutenancies Act 1997 defined them as areas of England which have an appointed Lord Lieutenant, who acts as the Monarch's deputy. For this reason, they are also known as Lieutenancies.
Regions of England
The counties of England are often grouped together for reasons of the convenience. The most common groupings are:
- South West England
- South East England
- London
- East Anglia
- West Midlands
- East Midlands
- Yorkshire and Humberside
- North West England
- North East England
